Ireland got their World University Games campaign off to a satisfactory start in Gwangju, South Korea when both the Men's and Women's sides managed to take draws for their opening group fixtures.

Ireland got their World University Games campaign off to a satisfactory start in Gwangju, South Korea when both the Men's and Women's sides managed to take draws for their opening group fixtures.

Men's Group D: Ireland 0 Uruguay 0; Russia 3 China 2.

The Ireland men served up a solid performance when holding the impressive Uruguay side to a scoreless draw in extremely hot and humid conditions.
The Irish enjoyed slightly better possessision with Eric Molloy, Gabhan Coughlan and Jonny Bonner all testing the Uruguay 'keeper.
Matt Connor in the Irish goal was also kept busy but did well to keep a clean sheet with a couple of superb saves.
The only concern for manager Danny Crowley was an injury to Coughlan just before the break which leaves him as a doubt for the next game against China on Sunday.

Meanwhile a Claire O'Riordan goal on 20 minutes gave the women's side a early boost in their opener against Chinese Taipei.
The IT Carlow student and Wexford Youths top scorer ran on to a superb Siobhan Killeen pass finished in style to put Ireland in front
But the lead only lasted a short time as the Hsin-hsuan Pao equalised for the Chinese 16 minutes later.
