IT Carlow will join IT Sligo in the WSCAI National Futsal Finals after a dramatic finale to their regional event hosted by the eventual victors.
The hosts saw off the challenges of the group stage comfortably with victories over Trinity College 'A' and Dundalk IT. In the second group, UCD brushed aside their group opponents, Trinity College 'B' and ITT Dublin, in a convincing fashion to advance to the semi-finals. Trinity College 'A' navigated their way into the last four on goal difference after a close draw with Dundalk. ITT Dublin completed the line-up after claiming victory in the stand-out game in the group phase against Trinity College 'B'. There was 11 goals between the sides in an exciting battle.
The group winners kept their form in the semi-finals, both seeing past their rivals without conceding a goal with UCD being the more ruthless in a 7-0 victory over their city rivals Trinity College 'A'. The manner in which both Carlow and UCD won created a huge anticipation for the spectators watching on.
This anticipation was justified with a high intensity classic. Rachel Graham gave the hosts the lead before Emily Cahill struck twice to turn the tide in the Belfield girl's favour. With time ticking down, Carlow began to edge closer to the panic button before Aoife Maloney found the back of the net to bring the sides level. In the closing stages both sides had chances to win but were kept out by some great defending. With extra time looming, Clare Kinsella broke UCD hearts in the final seconds to give her side victory.
UCD's Emily Cahill finished the day as top scorer with 7 goals just pipping Aoife Robinson who scored 6. Aisling Cusack (ITT Dublin) and the tournament winner, Kinsella, were also impressive with four strikes for their sides.
