maynooth university are going to the finals

30 January 2016

Maynooth University will join IT Sligo, IT Carlow and University of Limerick in the WSCAI National Futsal Finals after seeing past all their rivals at IT Blanchardstown.

Maynooth showed class in their group games versus DCU 'B' and Dublin IT, topping their group with no need for concern. Rachel Doyle (MU) provided the goal of the tournament with a sensational individual effort vs DIT. DCU 'B' then did enough to qualify from their group on goal difference after drawing with DIT who missed plenty of chances in the closing stages. In the other group DCU 'A' edged out the hosts by a single goal and then inflicted a heavy defeat upon DBS who had their goalkeeper dismissed for two bookable offences. IT Blanchardstown also managed to escape their group after a battling performance to edge past DBS.

In the first semi-final, loyalties were divided as DCU 'A' took on DCU 'B'. The A team delivered an A+ performance as they sealed their place in the day's final, again demonstrating their ability in front of goal. Aoibhinn Webb, who finished joint top-scorer with Amy Murphy (DIT), grabbed four of the goals. In the second clash, IT Blanchardstown took the lead through Emilie Ryan Doyle. The D15 College should have been out of sight, hitting the post twice. Maynooth were beginning to run out of ideas before their stand-in goalkeeper Amber Barrett took matters into her own hands. Picking the ball up in her area, she drove at the ITB team and could only be stopped illegally as she was fouled in the opposite keeper's area. She confidently dispatched the spot-kick. The Maynooth management team made the decision to put Barrett up top for the final few minutes. This was justified as she found the winner moments later.

In the final, chances were at a premium as both sides cancelled each other out. Maynooth had decided to leave Barrett up front and she was a good outlet for her side. With 7 minutes left on the clock, Barrett made the breakthrough with what turned out to be the only goal of the game.

While Barrett's performances in the knockout games proved to be the difference, Maynooth's Rachel Doyle was fantastic throughout the tournament along with Aisling Frawley of DCU.
