Froebel College of Education Student Teachers attended the Kick Start One Coach Education Course with the FAI. Sixteen students and lecturer Tony Sweeney participated in the first course held in Froebel College held over two weeks in January. The course focuses on the FUNdamental movement skills of children aged five to nine, using coaching cards to assist the teachers to run fun games that will help the children develop at the appropriate age. The student teachers also were given a workshop on the game of futsal that is taking Ireland by storm at the moment with over 5,000 children in over 450 schools having played the game of futsal since November.

The course was tutored by Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown County Council FAI Development Officer Rory O’Hare, FAI Schools Development Officer Ian Carry and National Coordinator for Schools, Colleges and Universities Gerard Dunne. “Educating the Student Teachers is a very important part of the two Strategic Plans we have produced (schools plan launched Sept 2007 and third level plan launched Feb 2008). We aim to give the student teachers an introduction to the game as many do not have a background in football so they can be a little hesitant to teach the game to the children when in the schools. This course and the futsal workshop gives the student teachers more confidence and the feedback we get from them is fantastic. In January alone we have run two Kick Start One courses Mary Immaculate College Limerick, one in Marino Institute and Froebel College, the student teachers are now looking for Kick Start Two courses to be run in there Colleges. I have to thank Tony Sweeney for his fantastic enthusiasm and help in setting up the first course in Froebel College. It has been a great experience for Rory, Ian and the student teachers” stated Gerard Dunne.

Tony Sweeney (PE lecturer)stated: it was great for our students to have such useful input which will assist them in their potential school or club roles as coaches. As the programme is based on fundamental skill development, the coaching and resources provided will also help them in their teaching of the strand of Games in PE in general”
