Irish Colleges pick up 3rd victory of season with win over Monaghan United at the FAI AGM
Monaghan Utd 1-2 Irish Combined Colleges
Irish Colleges picked up their 3rd win of the season following a fine performance against Monaghan United Ladies. The Colleges started off very brightly and retained possession for large periods, creating numerous chances through Annie Lynskey & Demi Vance, whose teasing crosses put Monaghan on the back foot for the opening quarter. The experienced defensive trio of captain Aisling Egan, Noelle Gormly & the very impressive Siobhan O Sullivan both kept any Monaghan threat at bay, but also provided the starting point for lots of our attacks. The breakthrough came after half an hour when Demi Vance capitalized on Monaghans’ failure to clear a corner, and finished sweetly past the Monaghan keeper. The goal was just reward for a good opening spell. The goal seemed to spark Monaghan into life, and shortly after the unfortunate loss through injury of Noelle Gormley, Monaghan found a gap and Charlene Graham struck a first time strike that enhanced her reputation as a hot-shot striker!
A little re-organisiation at half time saw Demi Vance move into a central midfield position, and this move led to the re-emergence of the Colleges dominance. After equalizing, Monaghan looked the more likely side to score the 3rd goal, but they failed to score and with Vance getting more and more involved with proceedings, the Colleges stepped up once more. Caitriona Dolan was highly effective all match long, her strong and direct runs at goal and sublime lay-offs to other attackers made her a tough proposition for the Monaghan rear-guard, and she sealed off an impressive performance with a neat finish ten minutes from the end. Monaghan pushed hard to equalize, and the College girls held out and recorded a fine win as part of the FAI AGM festivities in Monaghan.« Go Back
