UL Claim WSCAI Three in a Row

06 March 2010

University of Limerick won the WSCAI Intervarsities Cup for the third year running today at Turners Cross, Cork. A strong squad full of Irish Underage Internationals were too strong for an excellent UCD side who competed well on the day.

UL were dangerous throughout particularly from set pieces. The first chance of the game fell to 10(UCD) after good play on the right but UL goalkeeper Laoise O’Driscoll was quick off her line. After 18 minutes a free kick from Sarah Considine was punched clear by Shona Hanlon and after a scramble in the six yard box the ball fell to Siobhan O’Sullivan who poked home for the lead for UL.

After forty minutes a Louise Quinn free kick from twenty five yards flew over the wall and into the top corner leaving Laoise O’Driscoll with no chance. UCD had a great chance in the last minute of the game but Quinn couldn’t find a way past O’Driscoll. Kasey O’Driscoll got the winner for UL one minute onto injury time when she headed home Russell’s free kick.

In the Plate Final Athlone IT claimed their first Intervarsity Trophy beating IT Sligo 2-1 in a very close game. Chances were at a premium for both sides throughout the game. After ten minutes a 30-yard free kick from Deirdre Doherty flew into the top corner of the net to put Sligo into the lead. Athlone IT equalised just on half time when Charlotte Delaney went on a great run, beat two centre half’s and slotted home a great goal.

The second half continued to be a close affair and extra time looked on the cards when Athlone IT got the winner with just three minutes left. Sinead Taylor ran at the Sligo defenders and got a yard of room and despite being closed down quickly by Sarah Finnerty, Taylor clipped the ball over the keeper for an exquisite finish worthy of winning the competition.

Athlone IT Coach Maz Sweeney was delighted afterwards “I’m delighted for the girls they have worked very hard over the last three days and deserve this”. IT Sligo Manager “I’m pleased with the performance of this young team this weekend and throughout the season.  Their future in the game is bright. Playing the final in Turners Cross was a massive boost for the event this year and helps raise the profile of the tournament.”
