20 July 2010
The squad will travel to Keele University to take part in the Keele International Cup on the 23rd and 24th of July 2010
The Irish Combined Colleges squad will compete in the Elite category of the competition with the first game kicking off at 11am on Saturday against Mossley Hill. Avoiding one of the major English teams in the first fixture is a bonus for the the Irish Colleges team, although confidence is sure to be high in the Mossley Hill camp having lifted the Liverpool county senior women's cup in May.
There will be little time for rest, at 2pm the second group game against Everton Ladies is likely to provide their toughest challenge. Everton compete at the highest level at national level finishing only second to Arsenal. The final group fixture will kick off at 11am on Sunday against Curzon Ashton, a team from Manchester who finished mid table in the Premier League Northern Division.
Depending on results from the group game will determine if the squad progress to the later stages of the plate or cup competition. With such high profile teams as Blackburn, Liverpool and Man City competing to progress from the second Elite group the incentive to progress all the way to the Elite Final is high.
Emma Martin of the Irish Combined Management team is looking forward to a competative tournament, "Preparations have gone well over recent months. This is a great opportunity for many players to gain experience at higher level in preparation for possible selection for the World University Games which take place in China 2011".
