DCU qualify for the WSCAI National Futsal Finals

02 December 2011

This group went right down to the wire with DCU and UCD B finishing level on points. DCU qualify as they beat UCD B in the head to head group game.

UCD A and B teams got the Dublin Regional Futsal finals up and running with a spectacular display. The opening game had end to end chances for both teams. Ciara Grant broke deadlock on 10mins and within a rapid three minutes completed her hat-trick. Avril Kilkelly and Dora Gorman were both impressive for the A team. Kilkelly got one back and hit the post moments after. Catherine Cronin added another for the B team which proved to be the winner as O Donnell and Gorman added 2goals in dying moments to make it 4-3.

Trinity v DIT: This game kicked off with high tempo and both keepers at either end were called into action.  DIT gk saved from Mc Mahon, while straight up the other end TCD gk denied Bodiu. TCD gk made a brilliant double save but DIT reacted quickest to make it 1-0 at the third attempt.   DIT’s Laura Chambers took great touch and turn to score equalizing goal. DIT gk was kept busy in dying moments as Chambers was denied getting the winner on a couple of occasions.

DCU took on UCD B, and proved once again to be another fast paced game.  Lynn Bradley bravely stopped powerful drive from Grant on more than one occasion. DCU soaked up the early pressure Amy Ryan slipped O Doherty through, who finished neatly. Michelle Watson cleverly robbed the ball and broke from defense to make it 2-0. Ryan added a 3rd which proved to be the winner as UCD’s Naylor and Grant pulled 2 back for UCD.

Now that all teams had played at least one game, it was starting to take shape. DCU were leading the way with back to back wins over Trinity and DIT.

UCD’s Ciara Grant was proving to be a handful all day with an impressive scoring record. However, UCD B’s loss to DCU had costly effect. UCD A defeated DCU in final game of the day resulting in DCU and UCD B finishing level on points.  As a result, the winners were determined by the result between the two.  DCU had defeated UCD B 3-2 in the head to head game so they now march on to the National Finals in January.
