WSCAI Intervarsities Cup Final IT Carlow 2 UCC 0

IT Carlow made history today by becoming the first regional womens college to win the WSCAI Intervarsities Cup. In the group stages on Thursday and Friday, Carlow beat University of Limerick who were going for five in a row, and last year’s Plate winners Athlone IT. The semi final on Friday saw them come from a goal down to overcome current Premier Division winners IT Sligo to take their place in the Final.

I a tight game IT Carlow had the early chances after 13mins Katie Hannon made a double save from IT Carlow's Vanessa Austin to keep the game scoreless. UCC’s first chance came after 17mins when Yvonne Lyons just missed the target after she intercepted a pass from Carlow keeper Rachel Byrne.

Carlow almost took the lead after 25 mins when Niamh Nolan’s corner came back off the crossbar and just on half time a Louise Quinn header from a Nolan cross was straight at Hannon.

Megan Campbell has come on for Carlow at half time and she was to change the game. Her brilliant run and cross two mins was headed onto the post by Austin, but it wasn’t long before IT Carlow took the lead.

Another Nolan corner wasn't cleared properly and Campbell controlled and volleyed brilliantly to the UCC net to put Carlow ahead. UCC fought back and had a number of chances, a cross after 60 mins from Patrice Kearney was controlled well by Olivia Lyons but her volley was off target. The again went close when a well worked corner came to Lyons but her shot was well saved by Byrne.

With time almost up another corner from Nolan was not cleared and centre forward Vivienne McCormack drove an unstoppable volley to the back of the net to put Carlow two nil up and bring an end to an entertaining WSCAI Intervarsities.

WSCAI Plate Final: University of Limerick 4 UCD 3

University of Limerick who have won the last four WSCAI Intervarsities Cups were 3-1 down at half time and made a great second half comeback to beat long time rivals UCD 4-3 today at Salthill Devon FC.

UCD were the better team in the first half with an early long range shot from Avril Kilkelly that went just over the UL bar. UL had a couple of chances and after 20 mins a good shot from Jenny Brennan was pushed around the post by Roisin Murray and the resultant corner from Brennan was headed onto the post by Amy Jordan. UCD went into the lead with a fantastic 30yard strike from Avril Kilkelly after half an hour and four minutes later went two up.

Dora Gorman won a header to Kilkelly, who went on a great run and passed to Catherine Cronin who laid it back Laura Cullen who smashed it into the bottom corner.

UL forced a corner straight away and Brennan’s superb delivery was powerfully headed to the net by Jordan. Just before half time UCD went 3-1 up when Kilkelly's corner kick went all the way to the net.

6 mins after the restart UL scored a second after good play from Clodagh Dunworth, Vicki McMahon hit an unstoppable shot from just outside the penalty area. UCD made it 3-3 after 62 mins from another corner by Brennan this time finished by Karen Duggan.

UCD almost went ahead with a great counter attack after Kilkelly picked up a clearance and played a great ball for Cronin who went through one on one but her shot was saved by O'Sullivan. Minutes later UL went 4-3 up after good play on the left and the ball fell to Brennan who struck a superb curling shot to the top corner.
