In a tight battle at UL, Carlow had all the early chances and early pressure brought good goalkeeping Brennan ended with a shot from Emma Donohoe that just went wide. A Donohoe cross found the head of Niamh Barrett but she was just wide. Then Vanessa Austin’s shot clipped the bar. After 20 mins the pressure told when Niamh Nolan’s corner was headed in by Lyndsey Galgey. Then a free kick from Louise Quinn headed over by Megan Campbell. Noel O’Connor made two changes at half time and Mary I started better. After a number of chances went off target, Anna O’Dea hit a superb diagonal ball to Claudia Hudner who on het second touch buried the ball to the top corner of the Carlow net. IT Carlow hit back immediately and Nolan’s free kick was brilliantly saved by Brennan. With four minutes left on the clock a throw in for Carlow fell to Nolan who volleyed to net off the unfortunate Brennan. Mary I had two further chances to equalise but Hudner’s shot was brilliantly saved by Byrne and from the resulting corner there was an almighty scramble but the ball just wouldn’t cross the line for Mary and the final whistle blew.
