The Limerick section of the WSCAI Futsal competition was played today in LIT with rivals, LIT, UL and Mary I fighting it out for a place in the National Finals. The opening game was a tight one with LIT defending well against a much more technical UL side. It was 0-0 at half time and the second half was much the same with LIT defending well. However Saoirse Lenihan of UL found the back of the net mid-way through the half to score the only goal of the game and give UL a 1-0 win. The second game between Premier Division rivals UL and Mary I was a much more open game with both teams creating numerous chances. Both goalkeepers made many saves throughout to keep their teams in it and the game eventually finished 0-0 despite the number of goalscoring opportunities. Going into the last game Mary I knew they had to better the result achieved by UL against LIT to qualify and they went about it the right way by getting an early goal in the first half. However Lisa Maher equalised before half time to give UL hope of an upset and qualification for them. Early in the second half, LIT were awarded a penalty but the goalkeeper made the save to keep it at 1-1. From then on, it was all Mary I. Constant pressure and attacking play eventually paid off and they broke through the LIT defence to score 4 more goals and run out comfortable 5-1 winners. As in the men's regional Futsal finals, UL were again unbeaten throughout but lost out on goal difference, this time to a very deserving Mary I team who now advance to the next stage.
