20 May 2013

The Colleges and Universities Sports Association of Ireland has announced the menís and womenís football squads for the forthcoming World University Games, to be held in Kazan, Russia from 5 Ė 17 July.

The World University Games takes place every two years and represents the pinnacle of third level sport on a global scale. Approximately 13,000 students from over 150 countries will compete at the multi-sport event, akin to the Olympic Games in terms of standards, scale and participation. Ireland last competed in the Football competitions in 2009 in Belgrade.

Danny Crowley, Men's Football Manager said "We are delighted to be announcing the Men's Football Squad for the upcoming World University Games in Kazan, Russia. Having held trials all over the country, we are very pleased with the calibre of player that will be representing Team Ireland. The World University Games is a fantastic chance for our elite student athletes to compete at the highest level. We have a tough group in Mexico, China and Russia but our players are very much looking forward to the challenges ahead. I would like to thank all the players who took part in the many trials and games over the past few months and acknowledge the hard work that goes on behind the scenes from everyone involved in Third Level Football in Ireland."

Women's Manager and Senior International Manager Sue Ronan commented "This is a wonderful achievement for the students selected to represent their college and Ireland at this prestigious event. Some of the girls have represented their country before but some haven't and this is a fantastic opportunity to put themselves into contention for the senior women's squad. We have had an extensive trialling process starting back at last year's WSCAI Intervarsities in Galway, through this year's college season, Women's National League season and two trial days. We feel that the squad selected has a real chance of a medal"

Both Men's and Women's Squads will play six games each, the three group games fixtures are as follows:
Women's Fixtures
China v Ireland Friday (5th July)
Canada v Ireland Sunday (7th July)
