LIT advanced to the National Final of the WSCAI Futsal tournament following victory at the Regional event held in Limerick IT on Tuesday.
With only 3 teams in attendance it was down to who topped the group in a round robin event and with 2 wins from 2 LIT move on to the next stage.
The opening game between LIT and UL B was a tight affair with both teams creating chances on goal. A good individual display by UL player Elin Gustaffson scoring 3 goals meant that LIT found it tough to pull away. However, as time went on the overall squad strength of LIT proved the difference with 2 goals each for Lisa Maher, Melissa Molloy and Patrice Delaney and won from Michelle Masterson. Elisabeth Houland got one back for UL B but it finished 7-4 to LIT in the end.
UL A then faced off against UL B with both teams knowing qualification was still possible. However it was the fantastic Elin Gustaffson yet again that proved the difference here with 4 goals in the game taking her individual tally to 7 for the day. Two more for Elisabeth Houland and one for Lisa Menke made sure that the UL A team could not come back and a solitary goal from Grace O'Donnell wasn't enough to spark a comeback making the final score 7-1 to UL B.
In the final game LIT took on UL A with the Limerick IT girls knowing a draw was enough to qualify. However, they went all out for the win and went 3-0 up in a matter of minutes. Again a solitary goal from Grace O'Donnell was not enough for UL A as goals from Emma Corbett, Patrice Delaney, two from Melissa Molloy and four from Lisa Maher meant the LIT won 8-1 and qualified for the next stage.
Top goalscorer on the day was UL B's Elin Gustaffson with 7 goals followed closely by LIT's Lisa Maher with 6.
