UCD beat holders IT Sligo 3-2 in a thrilling WSCAI Futsal Cup at the Mardyke Arena, UCC today. IT Carlow claimed the Plate after beating hosts UCC on penalty kicks.

Six regional winners played in two groups with the holders IT Sligo hammering UCC in the first game 4-0 with the help of two goals from player of the tournament Emma Hansberry. Sligo beat first time finalists Limerick IT 3-1 and UCC drawing 0-0 with Limerick IT in the final group one game.
In group two Waterford IT started well with a 3-1 win over last year's runners up IT Carlow but UCD showed their intentions by beating WIT 3-2 and Carlow 5-1 with Ireland senior women's team players Ciara Grant and Julie-Ann Russell among the goals.
In the quarter finals UCC finally scored got some goals with a 4-1 win over WIT, the feature of this game was an excellent hat-trick by Carys Johnson. The other quarter final also featured a hat-trick by Clare Kinsella for IT Carlow as they hammered LIT 5-0.
UCD beat IT Carlow 5-1 for the second time of the day in the first semi-final as IT Sligo turned on the style by beating UCC 3-0 the feature an outstanding goal from Geraldine McLaughlan.
In the Plate Final an end to end game went all the way to penalties after a thrilling 1-1 draw with goals from Aoife Moloney for IT Carlow and Carys Johnson for UCC. IT Carlow winning the shoot-out 4-2.
The final was probably the best game of futsal in the WSCAI Finals. Emma Hansberry started the scoring for IT Sligo with a great run and strike, but Julie-Ann Russell equalised for UCD, who went 2-1 up within a minute after Niamh Walsh slide the ball under the excellent Rachel King in goal for Sligo.
The end to end game continued and it looked like it was going to be a bad day for UCD captain Ciara Grant as first she headed into her own net to tie the game then one minute later saw her penalty saved by goalkeeper King. However, the Donegal native would lift the cup after sustained pressure from UCD resulted in a winner with another own goal to bring this enthralling game to an end.
Director of Sport Declan Kidney attended the final and presented the Cup to UCD after the game and the champions will now go on to represent Ireland at the 2014 European Championship Finals in Rotterdam, Holland in July.
