17 November 2014
Last Friday afternoon, the 14th of November, the WIT Clubs & Societies Office, the WIT Soccer Club, the FAI and the Women’s Soccer Colleges Association of Ireland (WSCAI) launched the 2015 WSCAI Ladies Soccer Intervarsity’s which will be hosted by Waterford Institute of Technology on the 9th, 10th & 11th of April 2015.
The annual ladies soccer intervarsity's competition is one of the most prestigious events in the 3rd level colleges sporting calendar and it showcases the very best players and teams that are currently playing ladies soccer here in Ireland and to have them all in action here on the WIT Sports Campus next year is something WIT Sport are very much looking forward to.
Since the WIT Sports Campus opened up in Carriganore in 2010 Waterford IT has hosted various sports competitions and events including the Fitzgibbon Cup Finals (3rd level colleges hurling) weekend, the Ashbourne Cup Finals (3rd level colleges camogie) weekend, the O' Connor Cup Finals (ladies gaelic football) weekend and in 2015 the ladies soccer intervarsity finals will be in Waterford.
The WIT Soccer Club, both the ladies and men, are making great strides in recent seasons and our ladies team's achievements in the past 12 months cannot be overestimated. The girls achieved a unique double last season (2013-2014) when they won the Division 1 league and intervarsity plate and manager Johnny Browne and all his committed and skilful squad of players deserve great credit for their achievements and WIT are very proud of this team and their mentors.
At the launch Michael Evans, the WIT Sport & Recreation Manager, highlighted the work being done behind the scenes in the college to drive soccer forward and also mentioned the excellent work being done by John Douglas as Development Officer and Robin Croke as Clubs & Societies Officer which has been done over a sustained period, work that cannot be overstated.
Amongst the distinguished guests at the launch were both Emma Martin, chairperson of the WSCAI & Neil O' Donnell, competitions secretary with the WSCAI. Emma told those in attendance that she was delighted that WIT had won the right to host the 2015 intervarsity's and that she knew that all the teams and players involved would revel in the splendid facilities that WIT has to offer and that she and the WSCAI are eagerly anticipating an exciting and well organised event in April 2015.
