2015 WSCAI INTERVARSITIES PREVIEW

07 April 2015

The 2015 WSCAI Intervarsities Cup kicks off Thursday 9th April in Waterford IT Sports Campus Carriganore. Competing in the Cup Quarter Finals on Day 1 are: University College Cork, Ulster University Jordanstown, University College Dublin, University of Limerick, NUI Galway, Maynooth University, IT Sligo and hosts Waterford IT.

The competition will take place for a total of three days with three competitions, the Cup, the Plate and the Shield. The losing teams from the cup quarter finals will go into the plate semi finals whilst the next four best teams from the qualifiers will compete in the shield semi finals.

2014 winners IT Sligo come into the competition looking for a repeat of last year after having a successful year winning both the Premier Shield and the National Futsal Finals, and would strongly fancy themselves going far. Recently crowned Premier Division Champions Maynooth University will also be strong contenders having shown massive improvements this year under the stewardship of Peamount united Manager Robert Mulligan. The Kildare outfit have made some impressive strides this year, bolstering an exciting front-line with goal machine Amber Barrett and Peamount United legend Sara Lawlor, and will look to continue this in Waterford next week. University College Dublin will also be looking for some silverware this year having been beaten in the 2014 Intervarsities final and also losing a well contested Premier Division semi final to IT Carlow in early February.

Ulster University Jordanstown see themselves into the Cup Quarter Final, on the back of being crowned First Division Champions defeating Cork IT on penalties, and will be looking to cause an upset with Northern Ireland Internationals Amber Dempster and Lauren Wade leading the attack. The Belfast ladies face a difficult opening game against University College Cork, who will see themselves as outsiders for the competition having been narrowly beaten by eventual league champions Maynooth University in the WSCAI Premier Division Semi Final.

Competing in the Shield are Challenge Cup Champions Athlone IT, who will look to make it another successful Intervarsities tournament, having taken home the Plate in 2014 under the guidance of Donegal woman Mazz Sweeney. AIT ran out comfortable winners in the recent challenge cup final over North West Regional College from Derry, with goals from Claire Grehan and Shauna Jackson, and will look to be competing for Trophies again next week. Looking to prevent this will be Dublin City University, who proved to be a very difficult opponent during this years Futsal finals in Sligo. First Division runners up Cork IT will go straight to this year's final after receiving a bye.
