UL SHOCK HOSTS TO QUALIFY FOR NATIONAL FINALS

28 January 2016

University of Limerick provided the biggest shock so far in the WSCAI National Futsal Regionals, overcoming the host's Waterford IT in the final.

WIT had easily dispatched the eventual winners earlier on in the day and looked unstoppable throughout bar one small hiccup to UCC A. UL recovered strongly from their opening defeat, winning their next three games, scoring 13 goals in the process and only conceding 1.

There were goals a plenty throughout the day with some heavy defeats inflicted. Waterford were looking to replicate their men's national victory in Waterford by making the finals day on their own patch. They started off well with easy victories over UCC B and UL before becoming unstuck against UCC A. They recovered from that with another ruthless performance against IT Tralee to reach the day's final. UL held no prisoners after their opening loss, easily seeing past the rest of their rivals.

In the final, UL were more solid defensively and limited the host's chances. This caught WIT off guard and allowed UL to snatch victory and punch their ticket to the national finals where they will hope to pull off another surprise and become national champions.

Ciara Rossiter (WIT) was in fine form on the day with 7 goals, leaving her as top scorer despite the efforts of UL's Keara Cormincan and Claire Keating who both finished with 5.
