WSCAI INTERVARSITIES ROUND UP - DAY 2

15 April 2016

Claire O'Riordan experienced a day of mixed fortunes with the IT Carlow striker hardly over the celebrations after firing her side into to-day's Women's Intervarsities Cup Final with a late penalty in Carlow's 2-1 semi final win over UCC at Athlone IT.

What followed in the remaining minutes of play proved to be a disaster for O'Riordan who was then dismissed after picking up her second yellow card of the game will now have to sit out to-day's decider when IT Carlow take on IT Sligo at Athlone Town Stadium (2.30pm).

A tight game that saw no first half goals with an Elly Stritch shot for UCC that was well held by 'keeper Jackie Kinch the only effort that came close to breaking the deadlock it was Carlow who eventually went ahead 20 minutes after the break.

O'Riordan set up the goal with a through pass and Emma Hansberry ran on to apply a clinical finish.

The Cork side battled back and a great strike by Katie McCarthy after good work by Stritch got them back on level terms seven minutes later.

The turning point came in the final five minutes when Carlow defender Lauren Dwyer was taken down in the box and O'Riordan coolly slotted home the penalty for what proved to be the winner only to have her celebrations quickly cut short with her dismissal.

Two goals from Northern Ireland Senior International Catherine Hyndman helped IT Sligo to a 3-2 win over the fancied Maynooth University in their semi final clash.

The Sligo girls who shocked the holders UCD in the quarter finals the previous day went in front midway into the opening half when Hyndman had a shot blocked by Maynooth 'keeper Carol Hanna and then followed up to get the final touch after a goalmouth scramble.

Free scoring Amber Barrett struck two brilliant goals either side of the break to put Maynooth in control only for the unfortunate Rebecca Carroll to turn a Denise McGrath cross into her own net and level matters on 55 minutes.

But the talented Hyndman grabbed a late winner with a right footed effort after excellent play by Rachel Kearns to create the chance.

Premier League champions NUI Galway had little difficulty beating IT Blanchardstown 6-0 to reach the Shield Final with Lisa Casserly grabbing a hat trick in the opening six minutes.

Ulster University will be the Galway girls oppentents in to-day's final as they proved too strong for DIT coming out on top on a 4-1 scoreline thanks to a Niamh Connolly second half hat trick.

Another hat trick this time from UCD's Sophie Pratt gave them a 3-2 extra time win over DCU in the Plate semi final where they will face Waterford IT the 2-1 winners over hosts Athlone IT.

Chloe Walsh and Eimear Fennell struck the Waterford goals and a late own goal was little consolation for the tournament hosts.
