Premier Division side Maynooth University did not have to endure any threat of a giantkilling at the hands of their Division Two opposition Dublin IT, and comfortably advanced to Round Two of the Intervarsity Qualifiers.

Continental Tyres Womens National League star Amber Barrett was in no humour to allow a surprise result and latched on to a through ball after 6 minutes to give her side the early advantage. An advantage that would be doubled on 11 minutes when Barrett's free kick fell to the feet of Rachel Doyle who made no mistake in dispatching the ball into the net. Barrett would make it a daunting task for the home side when she made it three after 14 minutes.

DIT were struggling to settle into the game and maintain possession in the final third. Their best opportunity came when Amy Murphy found space in the box but could only fire into the side netting.

Maynooth had numerous chances to heap further misery on the home side but a combination of Barrett being wasteful and keeper McGovern pulling off some excellent saves with her feet, the Kildare side were kept at bay. That was until it clicked once more for Barrett which took the score into the break at 4-0.

The first 8 minutes of the second half were chaotic as both sides were able to score two goals a piece in an open period. Rachel Smith and Barrett would both net for Maynooth with Amy Murphy dispatching a penalty in between both goals and executed a brilliant turn and shoot to fire past Brooke Dunne.

The game settled down as Maynooth made a number of changes which disrupted the flow and allowed DIT to get more of a foothold. Any glimmer of hope the home side may have had of performing a miracle was safely extinguished in five minutes as Emma Byrne and Eimear Lafferty would both find luck with long-range efforts and Hannah Flatley would bundle home a corner.

Eager for more, Maynooth were stepping higher up the field but were caught cold on the counter when Murphy was sent through one on one with Dunne. A moment of hesitancy seemed to cost the Wicklow player but Emma Chamberlain would be on hand to knock in what turned out to be the final goal of an entertaining game for the neutral.

Maynooth's thoughts will now focus on next Monday's Round Two draw and a crunch clash with NUI Galway who memorably put them to the sword in last year's Premier Division semi-final. For DIT, without the Intervarsities, they will look to focus on their promotion challenge from Division Two with a Quarter Final place guaranteed and the cup in the new year.
