Amber Barrett struck on the double as Maynooth University claimed the Women's Intervarsities Cup at the Mardyke in Cork on Friday afternoon to complete a cup and league double for the season following their recent Premier Division title winning success.

After missed a penalty early on, Donegal native Barrett shrugged off the disappointment and went on to fire home a brilliant individual goal coming up to half-time and then, when the Kildare college were awarded another penalty in the 84th minute, she made no mistake with her spot kick to seal the win.

Maynooth were awarded a contentious first half penalty when Barrett was pushed in the back after receiving a throw-in.

But the Maynooth striker couldn't take advantage as her low shot flew wide of the post.

Barrett made amends six minutes before the break with a stunning opening goal.

She picked up the ball in midfield, and when two Galway players looked to have crowded her out. She held possession and then, after reaching the edge of the area, her low shot across Galway 'keeper Louise Creaven was perfectly placed in the bottom corner.

Molly Farrell had a chance of an equaliser in first-half injury time after she ran on to Alison McGonagle's through ball but though she sent a low shot past the advancing Brooke Dunne, the ball hit the post and rebounded to safety.

Five minutes after the restart, Galway midfield Lisa Casserly also had another chance to level but Dunne denied her, and shortly before the hour-mark Shauna Fox's free kick from deep broke for McGonagle, but her shot was gathered by Dunne.

Barrett then went on to seal the win in the final ten minutes converting a penalty after she had been taken down by Creaven in the box.

A delight Maynooth manager James Callaghan was fully of praise for his side and in particular goal scorer Barrett.

"The girls have been great all season, they put a lot of work into it" he said.

"Galway are a good team so we had to concentrate, defensively they were very solid. We're blessed to have Amber (Barrett), there's no coaching her. She's a once-off, she just gets the ball and does her thing" he added.
